Eckerd Connects began to provide services to North Carolina youth in 1977 with the opening of Camp E-Toh-Kalu in Hendersonville, NC This program was modeled after Eckerd’s wilderness programs in Florida that had been operating for nine years.
Within the next year, Camp E-Ku-Sumee opened in Candor, NC and then in 1979 Camp E-Mun-Talee opened in Lowgap, NC along with Camp E-Ma-Henwu in Newport, NC Eckerd successfully served thousands of youths for nearly twenty years in North Carolina. As needs continued to change, we designed a more abbreviated model that contributed to the growth of three more programs: Camp E-Tik-Etu in 1995 in Elizabethtown, NC, Camp E-Ten-Etu in the same year in Manson, NC, and Camp E-Ma-Etu located in Boomer, NC in 2000.We also continue to look at new opportunities to serve youth needing residential care. During September of 2020 Eckerd Connects accepted the contract to operate a 20-bed girls program located on the former site of Camp E-Ten-Tu located in Manson N.C.Help us connect children and families to the future they deserve through foster care, Job Corp, workforce development, juvenile justice & more.

We first hear of the imprisonment of the Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires, and their subsequent release by Zeus, in Hesiod's Theogony. However Hesiod makes no mention of Campe, or any guard for the prisoners. These events were probably also told in the lost epic poem the Titanomachy, upon which the mythographer Apollodorus perhaps based his account of the war.Zeus waged the war against Cronus and the Titans. They fought for ten years, and Earth prophesied victory to Zeus if he should have as allies those who had been hurled down to Tartarus. So he slew their jailoress Campe, and loosed their bonds.Diodorus Siculus says that the god Dionysus, while camped beside the Libyan city of Zabirna, encountered and killed "an earth-born monster called Campê" that was terrorizing the city, killing many of its residents. Neither Apollodorus nor Diodorus provide any description of Campe; however, the Greek poet Nonnus provides an elaborately detailed one.Such was manifoldshaped Campe as she rose writhing, and flew roaming about earth and air and briny deep, and flapping a couple of dusky wings, rousing tempests and arming gales, that blackwinged nymphe of Tartaros: from her eyelids a flickering flame belched out far-travelling sparks.Yet heavenly Zeus ... killed that great monster, and conquered the snaky Enyo Cronos. Thus for Nonnus, Campe is woman-like from the upper torso and above, with the scales of a sea-monster from the chest down, with several snaky appendages, along with the parts of several other animals protruding from her body.

Bradburn shared that both her and her husband had worked for the Department of Defense and each spent "many times in war zones on behalf of this nation," and spoken to McAlary "more times than she could count" about staying safe in any environment. TEXAS FLOOD SURVIVORS SHARE HARROWING STORIES, SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THOSE STILL MISSING · Debris and damage in Camp Mystic cabin split with a photo of Dick Eastland (REUTERS/Sergio Flores; LeslieEastland/Facebook)"Living in Virginia, we brought her to Camp Mystic and turned her over to the Dick and Tweedy Eastland family and Camp Mystics and their staff because we knew they would love on our child. They would help her grow in her faith and live the Mystic ideals of being a better person and bringing out the best in her," Bradburn continued."And what the men and the staff and the Eastland family did to try to help everyone that they could – they are heroes. And those young girls and those young counselors that our young girls were under for the summer were remarkable and were brave and were strong and saved so many children and kept so many children calm so that decisions could be made to keep other girls safe and move them to safety." — Tara Bradburn, mother of Camp Mystic camper Callie McAlary, 16"We heard one of the campers run in and say, ‘hey, our cabin is flooding." I knew some girls slept on trunks that night, some girls had to share beds, some girls slept on floors because they couldn't go back to their cabin because it was so flooded in three cabins." In an effort to protect herself and prepare for the worst-case scenario, McAlary put a name tag on her body in the middle of the night.

Eight years ago, in the aftermath of yet another river flood in the Texas Hill Country, officials in Kerr County debated whether more needed to be done to build a warning system along the banks of the Guadalupe River. A series of summer camps along the river were often packed with children.
For years, local officials kept them safe with a word-of-mouth system: When floodwaters started raging, upriver camp leaders warned those downriver of the water surge coming their way. But was that enough? Officials considered supplementing the system with sirens and river gauges, along with other modern communications tools.Kerr County had discussed buying such things as water gauges and sirens after previous flood disasters. But as with many rural Texas counties, cost was an issue.Published July 6, 2025Updated July 7, 2025, 10:37 a.m. ETIn the end, little was done. When catastrophic floodwaters surged through Kerr County last week, there were no sirens or early flooding monitors.

Camp Mystic, the Christian summer camp for girls on the Guadalupe River that was devastated by catastrophic flooding on Friday, is nearly a century old. Its facilities include a recreation hall that was constructed in the 1920s from local cypress trees. In a brief email to parents on Friday morning, Camp Mystic said parents of campers who had not been accounted for had been notified. The camp has two sites along the river near Hunt, Texas. On social media and in text messages, parents circulated photos of some of the missing girls and exchanged hopeful stories that they were hearing about dramatic rescues: girls clinging to trees or floating downriver to a boys camp five miles away. The camp was established in 1926, according to its website, and has been run by generations of the same family since the 1930s. The current owners, Dick and Tweety Eastland, have been with the camp since 1974. They worked alongside the previous owners for years after graduating from the University of Texas in Austin. The affected stretch of the Guadalupe River is home to several summer camps for children, including Camp La Junta for boys, about five miles from Camp Mystic. The boys camp informed families on Friday that all campers there were safe and fed, but evacuations would not begin until at least 7 p.m.

The camp director and co-owner of Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, died in the catastrophic flooding as he reportedly raced to save the lives of his young campers. Dick Eastland, who purchased the camp in 1974, died after the wall of water crashed through the Christian summer camp, which is located along the banks of the Guadalupe River, Texas Public Radio reported. The report cited a Facebook post from Eastland’s nephew, though the post has since been taken down. Counselors, former campers and politicians who knew Eastland praised him for his heroic actions and ultimate sacrifice to save his campers.Dick Eastland was remembered as a "selfless" man and "father figure." (LeslieEastland/Facebook) "Camp Mystic’s Dick Eastland no doubt gave his life attempting to save his campers," Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, wrote on X. "For decades he and his wife Tweety poured his life into loving and developing girls and women of character.Thank you Mr. Eastland. We love you and miss you." Pfluger said two of his daughters were at the camp when it was evacuated during the flooding, and they have since been reunited.
