Eckerd Connects began to provide services to North Carolina youth in 1977 with the opening of Camp E-Toh-Kalu in Hendersonville, NC This program was modeled after Eckerd’s wilderness programs in Florida that had been operating for nine years. Within the next year, Camp E-Ku-Sumee opened in Candor, NC and then in 1979 Camp E-Mun-Talee opened in Lowgap, NC along with Camp E-Ma-Henwu in Newport, NC Eckerd successfully served thousands of youths for nearly twenty years in North Carolina.As needs continued to change, we designed a more abbreviated model that contributed to the growth of three more programs: Camp E-Tik-Etu in 1995 in Elizabethtown, NC, Camp E-Ten-Etu in the same year in Manson, NC, and Camp E-Ma-Etu located in Boomer, NC in 2000.We also continue to look at new opportunities to serve youth needing residential care. Eight years ago, in the aftermath of yet another river flood in the Texas Hill Country, officials in Kerr County debated whether more needed to be done to build a warning system along the banks of the Guadalupe River. A series of summer camps along the river were often packed with children. For years, local officials kept them safe with a word-of-mouth system: When floodwaters started raging, upriver camp leaders warned those downriver of the water surge coming their way. But was that enough? Officials considered supplementing the system with sirens and river gauges, along with other modern communications tools.Kerr County had discussed buying such things as water gauges and sirens after previous flood disasters. In a brief email to parents on Friday morning, Camp Mystic said parents of campers who had not been accounted for had been notified.The camp has two sites along the river near Hunt, Texas. On social media and in text messages, parents circulated photos of some of the missing girls and exchanged hopeful stories that they were hearing about dramatic rescues: girls clinging to trees or floating downriver to a boys camp five miles away.The camp was established in 1926, according to its website, and has been run by generations of the same family since the 1930s. The current owners, Dick and Tweety Eastland, have been with the camp since 1974. They worked alongside the previous owners for years after graduating from the University of Texas in Austin.The affected stretch of the Guadalupe River is home to several summer camps for children, including Camp La Junta for boys, about five miles from Camp Mystic.
